Billy J. Murphy

Billy specializes in the representation of companies and investors in a wide variety of corporate and securities law matters, including mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity financings, company formations, general corporate representation and securities issuances and compliance. In addition, Billy has advised corporate clients on a wide range of legal issues and contractual matters, including: consulting and service agreements, management contracts, distribution and marketing agreements, licensing and partnering arrangements, employment and human resource issues, open source software license compliance, banking arrangements, real estate leases, product sales and export license compliance. Billy’s corporate clients conduct their business in a variety of sectors, including software, hardware, internet, advertising, consumer retail, restaurant, professional services, wireless commerce and biotechnology, among others. Billy has also assisted foreign companies with establishing a presence in the United States and domestic clients with corporate legal issues they are facing abroad.
Billy began his legal career working in Houston for Vinson & Elkins L.L.P., an international law firm based in Houston. From 2000 to 2004, Billy practiced in the Austin offices of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. and Silicon Valley-based Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, LLP. From 2004 to mid-2005, Billy served as General Counsel of TippingPoint Technologies, Inc., a publicly held security technology company acquired by 3Com for $430 million. Billy co-founded the firm in January 2006.
Billy is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas and the Travis County Bar Association. Billy received his B.B.A. with high honors, his M.B.A., and his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas. In 2004 and 2006, Billy was named a Texas Rising Star by Texas Monthly magazine in the area of corporate law.
Billy enjoys spending time with his wife Michele and his two sons, Owen and Kelly. When he’s not chasing the boys around, Billy also enjoys watching Longhorn sports and listening to, and occasionally even playing, music. As one might expect from a guy who spent eight full years at UT, Billy is a proud member of the Texas Exes.
